The aim of the application is to teach the common Cantonese words and to expand the vocabulary. Although the words included in the libraries sometimes have more alternate meanings, not all of them are listed as the application does not aim to function as a complete lexicon. Also, certain characters/words have more tones, though only one of them is listed. Upon building the word libraries the spoken versions had larger priority, so if a certain word has different written and spoken forms, usually the spoken version is included.
The word libraries are only in Cantonese - English, but the language of the application's UI can be switched between multiple choices in the Settings. Currently 2 UI languages are supported: English and Chinese (Traditional characters).
Learning
There are 3 kinds of testing modes:
Spoken Cantonese audio is played automatically for each word in Meaning and Listening modes, where at Listening mode the audio can be repeated any number of times. If you wish to use the app in such an environment, where silence is required, there is an option in the Settings for turning off the audio (or you may even lower the volume of your device). However, if the audio is turned off inside the app, the Listening mode will not be available for practice.
To start learning, you will have to choose a testing mode first and then a library, where its words will be used during the test. Each time a new test is started, the words are randomized. If you cancel the test or exit the app, the actual state of the test is saved so you can resume it anytime from the point where you have stopped. If you have finished a test and you had some incorrect guesses, then there is an option to repeat the same test just on the incorrectly guessed words only. You may keep repeating the test upon the incorrect guesses until you get them all right.
The top accomplished test rate for each library is displayed next to its name. This will indicate which libraries are already learned and where you need to put your focus on. These percentage rates are kept separately for each testing mode.
In case you find the text size to be a little small for you, there is an option in the Settings where you can choose between small (the default) and large texts. It will be applied to the Cantonese characters and some other texts used during the tests.
Statistics
The app will keep you various statistics of your tests in the Statistics menu including the ratio of incorrectly guessed words. The stats of the last test are always available here in case you have closed the test results screen but need to re-check those data. Statistics are shown individually for all the 3 testing modes, where only the best result is kept for them.
Library
The Library menu provides you a list of all the words that are available in the app. The words are categorized in different libraries, where most of them are having words in increasing difficulty. For example, the libraries Beginner I and II contain the most basic words that are recommended when you start learning the Cantonese language. While the libraries titled Expert are recommended for those who are somewhat familiar with the language. By selecting a library, the list of words is presented by the option of listening to the spoken Cantonese audio. Playing the audio is possible by tapping the individual characters themselves.

If you find a word where you think it has incorrect translation or you would like a new function to be implemented, please send your correction and/or feedback to the developer. There is a Feedback menu in the app or you may send your message to the indicated support e-mail address. Your help is greatly appreciated!

By downloading and using the Yuhtgong app, these terms will automatically apply to you, you should make sure therefore that you read them carefully before using the app. You're not allowed to copy, or modify the app, any part of the app, or my trademarks in any way. You're not allowed to attempt to extract the source code of the app, and you also shouldn't try to translate the app into other languages, or make derivative versions. The app itself, and all the trade marks, copyright, database rights and other intellectual property rights related to it, still belong to Joseph Gogh.
Joseph Gogh is committed to ensuring that the app is as useful and efficient as possible. For that reason, we reserve the right to make changes to the app.
You should be aware that there are certain things that Joseph Gogh will not take responsibility for. Certain functions of the app will require the app to have an active internet connection. The connection can be Wi-Fi, or provided by your mobile network provider, but Joseph Gogh cannot take responsibility for the app not working at full functionality if you don't have access to Wi-Fi, and you don't have any of your data allowance left.
If you're using the app outside of an area with Wi-Fi, you should remember that your terms of the agreement with your mobile network provider will still apply. As a result, you may be charged by your mobile provider for the cost of data for the duration of the connection while accessing the app, or other third party charges. In using the app, you're accepting responsibility for any such charges, including roaming data charges if you use the app outside of your home territory (i.e. region or country) without turning off data roaming. If you are not the bill payer for the device on which you're using the app, please be aware that we assume that you have received permission from the bill payer for using the app.
Along the same lines, Joseph Gogh cannot always take responsibility for the way you use the app i.e. You need to make sure that your device stays charged - if it runs out of battery and you can't turn it on, Joseph Gogh cannot accept responsibility.
With respect to Joseph Gogh's responsibility for your use of the app, when you're using the app, it's important to bear in mind that although we endeavour to ensure that it is updated and correct at all times, we do rely on third parties to provide information to us so that we can make it available to you. Joseph Gogh accepts no liability for any loss, direct or indirect, you experience as a result of relying wholly on this functionality of the app.
At some point, we may wish to update the app. The app is currently available on Android - the requirements for system (and for any additional systems we decide to extend the availability of the app to) may change, and you'll need to download the updates if you want to keep using the app. Joseph Gogh does not promise that it will always update the app. However, you promise to always accept updates to the application when offered to you, We may also wish to stop providing the app, and may terminate use of it at any time without giving notice of termination to you. Unless we tell you otherwise, upon any termination, (a) the rights and licenses granted to you in these terms will end; (b) you must stop using the app, and (if needed) delete it from your device.
